From the Vault: Silvía Night

In 2006, Silvía Night was sent to the ESC to represent Iceland. She sang a song proclaiming she was the best candidate to ever participate in Eurovision and, additionally, "God's favorite person in the world." In the song, she declared that she was the winner, and congratulated Europe for making the right choice and voting for her, thereby "saving the world."

This upset some people.

As you can tell by the video, Silvía was booed by the audience before her performance even began. Her reputation for being a self-aggrandizing diva preceded her. While she was the Contest, she managed to offend nearly everyone. She insulted the Greeks, who were hosting the competition, swearing at them constantly, and screaming in interviews about how people were "urinating all over the place" because of her brilliance. Silvía declared that the three young girls representing The Netherlands were prostitutes. And she called Carola, who was representing Sweden for the third time, a "fucking, ugly, old bitch" and claimed that she had slept her way to the top. After failing to qualify for the finals, Silvía topped off her weekend by throwing a tantrum outside of the venue which was filmed and broadcast by news programs all over Europe.

It later became apparent that Silvía Night is a satirical character, played by an Icelandic comedian and singer, Ágústa Eva Erlendsdóttir. The character was created to showcase all the worst qualities in human behavior, so she is supposed to behave like a psychotic, self-obsessed narcissist.

Even though she didn't get to perform in the finals, Silvía will always be a memorable entry. As she appeared on international news programs, with smeared mascara and tears running down her face, bravely telling the world that she would return, Silvía Night did exactly what she came to Eurovision to do. She didn't win the Contest, but she was triumphant nonetheless.
