Eurovision Royalty: Céline Dion

Well, OF COURSE Céline Dion competed in Eurovision.

It was 1988, and Céline was still a relatively unknown French-Canadian singer. Switzerland recruited her to sing the song, "Ne partez pas sans moi" (translation: "Don't Leave Without Me"). Surprisingly enough, there are no stated restrictions of nationality in the official rules for the Eurovision Song Contest, so Céline was allowed to compete even though she is not a native European. But she is of French heritage, and her song was in French, and the Swiss speak French, so, close enough.

As the votes came in from European callers (remember, the votes are tallied live, with all the performers present), it turned out to be the closest race in Eurovision history. Scott Fitzgerald, from the UK, was in the lead by five points. As the results from the last country, Yugoslavia, were announced, Céline pulled ahead by one point and won the contest.

THE DRAMA.
CELIIIIIIINNNNNE!!

Of course this song is so important because it essentially launched Céline's international career. She gained popularity in Europe, Australia, and Asia, and fame in America would follow. She is one of the most successful Eurovision artists of all time.

And, as we all know from this legendary video, Céline Dion is amazing.
